CSS-3

So the Safari 3 Public Beta has CSS-3. What does that mean? I have no idea! Anyone care to fill me in? I would like to know, when css-3 will be adapted by the rest of the browsers, what new about css-3 and about how long it will take to be accepted by the W3C if not already.

I am a quick coder and designer for the most part. I know making 3 working layouts take time, but if the site isn’t too complicated then I don’t see this as much of a threat. This site will be ReWriteRecords online business card, but will also feature music and news. This isn’t ALL that much content. After i get done with sketches and post them, I will also have a link tree.

Sites That Inspire

http://www.stonebriar.org – Really well coded site that has an awesome color scheme, textures, and typography.

http://www.axiomoval.com – Clean static design style but flash and very interactive. Good organization. This site inspires me tokeep things simple and not try and jam a bunch of stuff all on one page. I sometimes have a habit of bombarding people with my homepage.

http://www.nudiejeans.com – Awesome flash site consisting of video, music, and great style. The thing that inspires me is the music guy on the far right.

http://www.pr0jects.com – Really nice global navigation. I love how easy it is to get around on this site.

http://www.45royale.com – Can we say web2.0 style? But…the nav is CLEAN! I also enjoy the colors used. The code is very nice also.

http://www.5000xzukunft.de – I like the grungy stuff, but my stuff always comes out too grungy. So, i look for inspiration here on how to do just enough to get the point across…and that point is, “I’m a dirty German.”

The mikePhone

So everyone has an iPhone now. Everyone at my work, almost all my close friends…EVERYONE. I am a mac fanatic and i dont have one…this world doesn’t make sense. Well thats all about to change as soon as i get a little more spending cash. But I’m not just getting an iPhone…if i set it down at work i might pick some one else up by mistake. No, i need something that stands out. I present to you, the MikePhone:

ISL – Final Project Proposal

www.ReWriteRecords.com

A functioning website for a independent music label base out of Dallas, Texas. The client wants an edgy, artsy feel to the interface while still containing a strong usabilty and orginization. The color pallet, which is still being developed will consist of contrasting colors, the likes of black and red, with other shades of marroon.

The client has strong ideas about the design process, which might cause some tension with the design, but the designer has reminded he client that he is getting this site for free via class project and he should be happy with whatever he gets. HAHA.

Embedded audio and video is a must with this project, even some simple flash might be used as branding and a host for audio playback. More to come on this project, meeting with client over thumbnails have been scheduled.

RSS TV

So, if you can read your news the second it is posted while sipping your coffee in the morning before work, why not watch it. Heck, why not watch the new episode of Family Guy while your at it. In fact…i want to watch every show i missed this whole quarter because i was too busy studding. Well, im in luck and so are you. RSS feeds have made they’re way to broadcasting and in a big way.

If you own a mac, you in luck because im going to hook you up. First you need a video RSS aggrogater(sp).  A program called Democracy is now called Miro and you can find it here:

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/29229

Nxt you need some feeds, and to do that you need to go to a site that has all your convient RSS video feed listings. To do so, go here:

http://tvrss.net/

Now your ready to go…but not before you get a little more insight into how this works. If you know anything about BitTorrents, you know it is the new way to download programs and music. The way a BitTorrent works is, you select a file to download, and that file is found amongst many different users from all over. The file is then cut into a % and download from all users online who current house the file. This makes downloading the file faster, and uses less of the host(s) bandwidth. Miro works the same way, it download the file you are watching, from multiple users.

Now your on your way to watching all your favorite programs for free from your laptop….who needs cable now. Oh, and remeber…if it doesn’t work, you’ve always got www.tv-links.co.uk !!

5 Things I Want!

Number one, a pony. Haha, just kidding.

Listed below are things I would like to learn in my Intermediate Scripting Languages class. From now on…I’m calling it ISL because I almost gave myself carpal-tunnel syndrome writing that big, long name out.

1. Writting code that is global browser compatible. (Safari, IE, Fire Fox, and Opera)

2. Steaming music and video. Also, correct embedding of such media.

3. Better de-bugging techniques.

4. More on how to use relative and absolute positioning to strengthen designs.

5. FORMS! I still am not very good at making forms work. Scratch that…I have no idea what im doing when it comes to forms.

A Design Process Revealed Responce

Douglas Bowman has a solid grasp on a process for any creative project, be it personal or for a client. I feel as if he was stopped short though. Maybe for intended reasons, but I think a major part of the design process should involve the user. He has a chance here to relate how important user centered design is along with his current process of personal comparisons and sketching. Unless he has another entry on keeping the user in mind while practicing his design process, I think it should be added.

I agree completely with comparing oneself with competition or peers of a higher design capability. This will not only help you grow as a designer, but keep you from repeating mistakes others have made.

All these steps take allot of time to complete and could make an easy job much longer than most would think is needed, but as the author obviously believes, this is something you should do on every project no matter what. Much like an artist will draw layers of a binding box, skeleton, then gestures before the detail of a character, a web designer should build his site from the ground up giving it a solid foundation.
